Best Headphones For Hip Hop DJs

Best Headphones For DJ’s

Let`s re-focus our ears once again. Do you remember our great stories on the “Top 13 Closed And Open-Back Headphones For Hip Hop Production”?  Well in this article we are putting our beloved Hip Hop Disc Jockeys on the stand, lightening up the “Best Headphones For Hip Hop Djs”.

My experience As A DJ/Producer

Being a DJ/Producer myself, I can relate to the importance of a good pair of ear-cans. I have worked in many different areas, mostly the smaller place events and open-ambiance ones. And even though I haven`t got the chance to try that many models, these past 7 or 8 years of work did bring couple of great headphone experiences. Let me explain further.

The Right Calling Number

Being a DJ is not an easy thing. It gets easier with your passion and love for the music and doing something that only comes as natural to your as every little daily thing you do. But making a career in anything, especially art is something that requires a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifice as the main character line.  Djing can be fun in both ways. It can also be an easy job if it`s your sidekick, your hobby.

What TYPE Of DJ Are You?

Yes, the type of a DJ you want to become will determine your ultimate result. Thanks to the Electronic Era we can`t even begin to number out the types of Djs there are. From Club, Radio, Live Events, Home Production or Djs/Producers, Internet Djs, Vinyl Djs, Scratch Dj,  you name it. And not to forget that in some occasions the type is chosen on the person`s current budget , hence the equipment.

DJ Monitoring System, Decks/Controller

The monitoring system. One of the most important things a DJ can own. You don`t even have to have any type of DJ Deck/Controller. I started out using just a borrowed friend`s laptop and my skills took me to a quick rise so I almost instantly had to upgrade. But starting out, all I had was passion. Being a self-taught artist I have learned to adopt fast to the new things there were thrown at me. My first headphones were not the professional ones, but they had enough power for the small to medium close-spaced events to go by.

Price Doesn’t Determine The Quality Of Workflow

It`s so important to remember, it`s not always the price that will determine the quality of your workflow. You could be spending hard-earned bills or your loaned budget uselessly just to discover there`s a much better, smarter way to go by.

My First Pair Of Headphones As A DJ

I mostly owned some pretty good knockoffs. Yes. I changed a couple of them. And they were not the perfect ones of course. But I learned to listen. I know exactly what to expect out of them. So I never had any troubles. But it is crucial to own a pair of decent priced original ones, even for the small events like I`m covering. Because regardless of the model, if they are not isolating the outbond atmosphere, you will not fail in displaying your skills. But you will have much more tension escalating , trying to focus on people, the reflected waves and your arrangement when the music coming from your computer is not loud enough.

Closed Back Headphones Are For DJ’s

Talking about isolation logically brings out the preferred, the “must have” reason of the type of headphones most Djs use. I say most, because there are some who need the semi-opened, but that will not be the case here. For a Hip Hop Dj, best headphones to pick from are the ones labeled as “closed-back”.

I personally like always having the choice of holding my left can on the left ear, while my right stays above the right ear. And when needed for better isolation, trying to match two songs or hearing the specific part of the track, I like my right coverage to do the job.

The Comfort Of Your Headphone IS Important

There`s one last thing. Many of you know this, but even with great user reviews. There is still going to be an issue if your ear shells can`t match the given model. The Comfort is another most important thing to check before you jump into the mixing session. Especially if you`re constantly doing live gigs. If your best headphones can`t hold at least 4-5 hours without hurting your shells, you just lost all the money for nothing.

Mixing At Home Is Different From Mixing Live

When you’re home mixing, you can take them off, take a brake and continue the work later. But when going On Air, you must pick the right ear cushions. And that`s why, when buying the adequate DJ monitoring ear system.

Useful Tip: Caps that are just out of the ear-shell area seems to be the silver lining here.

Headphone Cords Are Pivotal

Excellent cording cannot be taken that lightly. Good quality cords are more than pivotal thing to take care of. The isolation that your headphones give does not come only from the ear-cups, but the quality of cord structure.

Headphone Jacks – TRS Explained

Also, take care of those jacks. First thing you need to check, is that they are not loose when plugged in. Golden-plated or not, you have probably heard of a jack term TRS or TRRS. In short, TRS stands for Tip-Ring-Sleeve, further meaning Left Channel, Right Channel, Ground. And TRRS adds another channel for Mic that has found most of its use on todays Smartphones.  So two rings means stereo. But also pay attention when playing from any Apple device, or using an Apple headphones. Even though the ones for Djing are made to be quite adequate for any jack, they switched the rings order on theirs, and made their products extra unique for use within the Apple area only.

What Qualities Make A Headphone The Best For A DJ?

Our Top Hadphone Picks are determined by the driver size (which in my personal opinion for you Djs shouldn`t be anything less then 40mm). Then by the frequency range, even though that is not so much of a big deal in the upper area. The bigger driver gives bigger bass response, which is the most important thing here. And the impedance measure (the low the better, because it does not require additional amp). Dj headphones`s impedance ranges from 25 to 75ohms.
